An excerpt from Kenneth Koch's "Some General Instructions"

I know this isn't an original work, but I felt that it was important for me to post this right now. Things are changing and I think it's about time to do something about it.
Thanks for sharing this with me, Kate. You're not allowed to change too much.

The problem of being good an also what one wishes
is not as difficult as it seems. It is, however,
Best to get embarked early on one's dearest desires.
Be attentive to your dreams. They are usually about sex,
But they deal with other things as well in an indirect fashion
And contain information that you should have.
You should also read poetry. Do not eat too many bananas.
In the springtime, plant. In the autumn, harvest.
In the summer and winter, exercise. Do not put
Your finger inside a clam shell or
It may be snapped off by the living clam. Do not wear a shirt
More than two times without sending it to the laundry.
Be a bee fancier only if you have a face net. Avoid flies,
Hornets and wasps. Clasp other people's hands firmly
When you are introduced to them. Say "I am glad to meet you!"
Be able to make a mouth and cheeks like a fish. It
Is entertaining. Speaking in accents
Can also entertain people. But do not think
mainly of being entertaining. Think of your death.
Think of the death of the fish you just imitated. Be artistic, and be unfamiliar
Think of the blue sky, how artists have
Imitated it. Think of your secretest thoughts,
How poets have imitated them. Think of what you feel
Secretly, and how music has imitated that. Make a moue.
Get faucets for every water outlet in your
House. You may like to spend some summers on
An island. Buy woolen material in Scotland and have
The cloth cut in London, lapels made in France.
Become religious when you are tired of everything
Else. As a little old man or woman, die
In a fine and original spirit that is yours alone.
When you are dead, waste, and make room for the future.
Do not make tea from water which is already boiling.
Use the water just as it starts to boil. Otherwise
It will not successfully "draw" it. Byron
Wrote that no man under thirty should ever see
An ugly woman, suggesting desire should be so strong
It affected the princeliest of senses; and Schopenhauer
Suggested the elimination of the human species
As the way to escape from the Will, which he saw as monstrous
Demon-like force which destroys us. When
Pleasure is mild, you should enjoy it, as far as
You can, to enjoy you. Pain should be
Dealt with as efficiently as possible. To "cure" a dead octopus
You hold it by one leg and bang it against a rock.
This makes a noise heard all around the harbor.
But it is necessary, for otherwise the meat would be too tough.
Fowl are best plucked by humans, but machines
Are more humanitarian, since extended chicken
Plucking is an unpleasant job. Do not eat unwashed beets
Or rare pork, nor should you gobble uncooked dough.
Fruits, vegetables, and cheese make an excellent diet.
You should understand some science. Electricity
Is fascinating. Do not be defeated by the
Feeling that there is too much for you to know. That
Is the myth of the oppressor. You are
Capable of understanding life. And it is yours alone
And only this time. Someone who excites you
Should be told so, and loved, if you can, but no one
Should be able to shake you so much that you wish to
Give up. The sensations you feel are caused by outside
Phenomena and inside impulses. Whatever you
Experience is both "a person out there" and a dream
As well as unwashed electrons. It is your task to see this through
To a conclusion that makes sense to all concerned
And that reflects credit on this poem, your species, and yourself.
Now go. You cannot come back until these lessons are learned
And you can show that you have learned them for yourself.

Fries in the Mourning...

Love you?

I have one more exam to pass and then I will graduate college.

Last night I was awake long beyond my mind's capacity to study so I colored a drawing I made earlier in the day.

It's been nice to realize that I've formulated a sustainable way of putting together my art!
I'm going to spend a lot more time on this and make it look presentable. I thought it would be interesting to post as is because, frankly, it's pretty durn weird with the colors smooshing around and all that. And also looks stupid.

Melissa is having the qualities identical to that of an inspiring person (hey language & logic I am not your female dog after all) and I think I've created a rule that whenever she posts I will post. This ish is ON!

doodles

In neglecting my studies, I found some old doodles. Cat Couch was turned into a screen print I need to post next.

Edit: found these silly doods too... I think the strawberries need to be saying something fruity.

Beeing Buzzy

I've found that when one is really busy posting simply does not happen.

For the past year I have been working on my Senior Studio show, Future Projections of Individuation.

I'm currently finishing the final write-up. When that's finished I will include pictures and videos and music and explanations.
Frog gains Introspection
This is one of the 22 images that were on display.

I am realizing that I am in dire need of a blog for musical creations! Blogger is a booger in terms of adding music. I may about to be a-tumblin'. Hopefully by the end of the week!

Hmmmm.

So...
Maya and I have more or less failed in this blogging business as of late. But there is more than just a smell of snow in the air folks... CHANGE AND CREATIVITY IS FAST APPROACHING. ALL CLEAR FOR LANDING. As this semester finally comes to a close, and Blacksburg becomes significantly less populated, our brief summer days of creativity will be reinstated. Blossoming seeds of imagination will break through the sheets of ice and allow us to grow and love again. Ahh, for once I wish time would move a little faster. [Welp. I think that paragraph just made this blog a little lamer.]

Anywho, I thought a mild update was in order.
First of all, SHOUT OUT to Maya Renfro's senior studio Future Projections of Individuation, a complete and utter success, if I may myself proclaim. You are it, m'lady, the Bees Knees. And I am pleased to have you as one of my dearest friends. The show was, in a word, scrumtrulescent. Maybe the lady will be kind enough to post her work someday for public viewers, who knows. Luckily, there are a few tasty treats already in view on this here very blog!

Oh yea, and this one time Maya and I went to Richmond, VA together and it was awesome.
The latter two photos were taken by my step-lilsis, Stephanie, and her ridiculous new Nikon. The former was just my crappy ol' film camera, but the love is still there.

That's it and that's all folks. Procrastinating my studies has reached a new low, eh?
Where is Sam Shelby!?!?!?

SPXxXXxXxoxoxo=HUgs and Kissuhs

After going to SPX and meeting lots of lovely people, Melissa and I have resolved that we must get on our "game".

Not only our single-ladies game, but also the single craft ladies game. We gain a super amount of more time than taken ladies seeing as we don't have to be making out all the time, not to mention that we never have to make sandwiches for anyone but ourselves, and this time should be spent on CRAFTKS.

Thus, I've uploaded some drawerings.

Seems like much of my time is taken up by making arts for other people, or for ike as in dwight. I should probably post all of this as well. There is that funny syndrome of having looked at your art for so long that it ceases to feel like you made it.

So! Herur sum pikturs.

Irony

It seems to me that the dude on the left said it first.
This is inspired by my friends' dog, Whiskey.

Mama and Bambino
Maybe the guy getting a shoulder ride can see much more from his new perspective.

I don't know if they're flying or falling.
I want to make super-old into a comic.

Even though very few people check this if you DO look at it, make sure to see Lizz Hickey's sick comics. She's a kooky kool gal.

THE CREEPIEST thing that is also really awesome (creepy can mean awesome) is that I actually met Lizz two years ago at an SPX. She had a lot of neat-o prints and it was one of the only thangs I got.

THIS IS SUM PRINT I GOT:

PS Kate Beaton is a genius and I feel like I scared her in admiration. I will post her "polite cowboy" drawing that I requested for roomate-Daniel later today.

How do people do all this posting business? I feel like there is far too much to post constantly.

Fact: All things are suddenly adorable when tiny.

My friend Jenn and I bought some Sculpey. This led to two full evenings of fun (and a little crazy). I made more creepy heads (to be posted in the questionable future) and we both made miniature food into magnets that burst with cuteness. Also, I finally finished my Gnome family!

To treat ourselves, we ate homemade cantaloupe ice cream! I found a simple recipe online after I bought two cantaloupes on sale at the store. It has a strange texture, but is delightfully delicious.

This Post is a Card but not a Postcard.

Here is a letter I sent my sister, Meredith. We have begun exchanging handcrafted trinkets and do-dads to one another as a way of keeping in touch, exercising our crafty fingers and receiving mail, because who likes an empty mailbox, I ask you!?

This posts' craft medium: an old book cover and magazine clippings

COLLARBORARATION CELLABELLARATION

ME AND MO 'LISSA MAKING THE SHEEZ!

FWIRST RULL COLLAB ART PEESE:

It came out like, like, like, a LOT better than either of us expected it to. We keep looking at it in awe. It kind ended up being a tribute to Andrew Bird's lyrical finesse. What a hot dude. So talented. Hottness.

Realizing the Greatness of My Endeavors

I went to the Pitchfork festival in Chicago this past weekend and met a lot of lovely artists, both musical and otherwise. It has made me realized the amount of effort that I must put into my crafts in order for them to be up to the caliber that I desire. While I am glad that I can sketch intricacies quickly, there is simply no substitute for putting time into a thing. One must add that crucial dash, dollop, or splash of time.

Here is a flier that I created and handed out at the fest detailing the cd release of Ike as in Dwight-the band which has proven the time-clause.

In the next week I will work hard on some screen prints and perhaps this will show! Perhaps not. We shall see.

Honey, Sweetie, Doll-face, Toots... Tootsie!

Thoughts on the film Tootsie:

Message:
It takes a man (specifically a trim and dreamy Dustin Hoffman) to make a difference in the world of women. Yes, this may be a rather cynical reading of the message of this lighthearted, feel-good comedy, but it's there. Before Hoffman came on to the scene, women were pushed around in the workforce, verbally degraded with little complaint, and even physically molested by creepy old men with bad teeth. Enter Dorothy! and in the words of Twisted Sister, ironically another man dressed in drag, "We're not gonna take it, no! We ain't gonna take it. We're not gonna take it anymore."

On that note, Women:
Although Dorothy is the ironic feminist leader of the film, I became partial to Hoffman's neurotic friend, Sandy. She is crazy, yes, but in the end had the best lines (most of which are unfortunately not listed on on IMDb). However, here's one I remember: "No, we are not friends. I don't take this shit from friends. Only from lovers." Context, Dustin Hoffman stood her up for the third time, told her he was in love with someone else, and then preceded to ask if they we're still friends. Game, Set, Match.

Sex: Did anyone else feel the lesboerotic undertones? Did you want to? You did. And so did my fellow movie watchers and I.

Soundtrack: What can I say? It's golden! An 80s cheese fest for the true at heart! Smooth saxophones, a giddy piano accompanying smiles and the subtle lyrics of encouragement, "Go, Tootsie, Go!"

All in all: I'm a fan.
And I think I'm going to start watching more of Bill Murray's early films again. It felt like he had about 8 full lines in the film, but I loved every minute of it. Who wants to come over to watch Ghostbusters with me? Are you ashamed that you want to? Should you be? Am I ashamed for you? Shhh.

observations on beauty and the beast

an actual line from "be our guest":
Life is so unnerving
For a servant who's not serving
He's not whole without a soul to wait upon
Ah, those good old days when we were useful...

hopefully the above is just a metaphor for wanting to be human again...

the 2002 version i'm watching actually has an added scene called "human again", perhaps in an attempt to remedy my particular observation about "be our guest"?

also: beast has a ton of servants if you go by the "most every inanimate object in this castle is enchanted" rule as evidenced by "be our guest".

belle's got major balls: she gives up her life to save her father's, she's a woman AND SHE READS in a provincial town, she has the servants throw her a personal, incredibly extravagant smorgasbord after the beast has strictly forbidden her eating without him, she wanders into the west wing after said meal, blatantly ignoring beast's other dire interdiction to stay the fuck out of there, AND ALMOST (PROBABLY) KILLING HIM BY MESSING WITH THE (ENCHANTED) ROSE. she also somehow escapes the castle briefly after an unsurprisingly violent confrontation, proceeds to get almost mauled by wolves, then starts beating them away with a stick. yup. also, she teaches a beast how to eat porridge delicately with a spoon.

q w/ a q; did you really watch beauty and the beast? did you really read a full blog post about beauty and the beast?

A New Beginning...

Now begins an executive meeting of important personages. They will discuss what direction this illustrious page of web will take henceforth. Speaking over banana sandwiches, soccer, coffee, and an inappropriately styled soundtrack, the members have made it clear; this blog will be an endeavor to answer questions with questions.
It's up to you to make the decision. Are you with us or against us?

Will we ever be sure?
Are you with us now?
Still there?

Consciousness Map

This is a conceptual mock-up for my Senior Studio. It is going to be a 3-D map of subconsciousness that you can navigate through. Basically I will make a bunch of drawings into vectors and then you can explore the terrain. The final show will also be accompanied by actual drawings. I believe I will use a combination of Blender and Jitter for the final iteration.

What Can I say, I enjoy his Writing...

I don't know if you recall this Klosterman article, but he wrote about how because there is no one entity to blame for the absence of real love, he will thus tack John Cusack with the blame of unattainable bliss.
This is relevant right now because last night I had a dream that I was speaking to John Cusack. I have no clue about the details of our conversation, but this morning I concluded that I must've spoken to the devil of men and the supreme angel of women, seeing as he is idyllic to the latter.

I'm going to draw that.

I don't know if I had this dream because I am slowly becoming a lesbian due to current life events. That is an incredibly incorrect statement and I honestly believe that people fall in love with people, not necessarily genders.

The following are shirts that I will be making this week, the lamb is for the band, and the second for the Fever to Sing music fest in Blacksburg!!
(The band shirt is upside down.)

I'm going to be posting much more, I think.
